i) the phrase “like walking skeletons” suggests that the wolves are so thin that they are reduced to a bag of bones / a bony frame ii) phrase “their muscles like strings” conveys the idea that the wolves were so skinny that their muscles look limp and under developed iii) the phrase “mere skin-bags” emphasises that the wolves appeared like they did not have adequate amount of flesh and muscles, so much so that their skin was hanging loosely on their bodies.

the author expected the wolves to scatter at daylight like the other days instead they remained in a circle around him.
a) i) he extended the fire into a large circle ii) he then crouched inside the circle to protect himself.
b) he hoped that the shelter of flame would protect him by creating a barrier between the wolves and him.
- creating a barrier comes from use of word “shelter”
i) firstly, the circle of fire had broken segments, which formed gaps that the wolves could pas through ii) secondly, henry was too tired to stay awake
- the wolves were so close initially, but yet they moved away. OR wolves did not eat him even though they were close initially but left instead
