Definition
Compound of oxygen and a nonmetal. This compound does not show properties of acids and bases. #ChemistryDefinitions
Physical properties Since neutral oxides are oxides of non metals - these compounds are covalent substances with simple covalent structure.
- Low melting and boiling points. Gaseous at R.T.P
- Insoluble in water (except for water)
- Poor conductors of electricity when solid, liquid, gas.
Chemical properties Water reacts with basic oxides to form aqueous solutions of metal hydroxides (alkalis) Water reacts with acidic oxides to form aqueous solutions of acids.
