Definition

natural gas and crude oil are considered non renewable sources of energy. There are limited amounts of these sources and they cannot be replaced quickly enough to keep up with our rate of use. #ChemistryDefinitions

These resources cannot be replaced within short period of time after being consumed.

  • at rate we consume these resources - prediction that they will be used up within decades.

Formation of Natural Gas and Crude Oil

  1. Million of years ago - tiny sea creatures and plants sank into seabed upon death. The dead creatures and plants were slowly covered by mud and sand

  2. Heat from earth and high pressure acted on these organisms over millions of years, eventually producing crude oil and natural gas.

  3. Crude oil and natural gas are often found in underground deposits hundred or thousands of metres below earth surface. deep wells have to be drilled to get them out.
