Metals found between Group II and III of Periodic table → called transition elements.
Common Transition metals:
- Titanium
- Vanadium
- Chromium
- Manganese
- Iron
- Cobalt
- Nickel
- Copper
- Silver
- Tungsten
- Platinum
- Gold
Important
Elements in group 12 are NOT transition metals (e.g. zinc)
Physical Properties
- Good conductors of heat and electricity
- High melting and Boiling points
- High density
- Variable Oxidation States
- Catalysts

Chemical Properties
- They form ions with variable oxidation states in their compounds
- E.g. copper(II) and copper(I) ions

- E.g. copper(II) and copper(I) ions
- They form coloured compounds
- E.g. aqueous copper(II) sulfate is a blue solution

Note
White solids or colourless solutions are not considered coloured
- Elements and/or their compounds → often able to act as catalysts

Note
Catalyst is a substance that increases rate of chemical reactions and remains chemically unchanged at the end of the reaction
They can usually act as catalysts
