Japanese Army vs Navy long term conflict since Meiji period

1930s:

  • both services of Japanese military diff. strategic goals and ideas how they wanted to seize territories to obtain resources sustain Japans economy

War Broke out:

  • rivalry prevented them from sharing resources + exchanging military intelligence
  • Could not coordinate attack/defence against Allies.

1942 Navy requested army provide troop support for invasion of Aussie refused

  • remained unresponsive throughout Pacific war late to recognise threat of US counter-offensive in late 1942

1943 army refused to commit major reinforcements to Pacific Island.

Both services - also could not agree on where to set Japans defensive perimeter against Allied forces.
