Militarist Govt’s industrialisation efforts efforts were further encourages by new emphasis on expanding empire and preparing for war.

  • also shifted from developing consumer industries to heavy industries + chemical production
    • led to a production of arms and big construction projects roads, railways, bridges

Govt also increased spending to stimulate Japans’s economy. More money set aside for heavy industries, expanding manufacturing industries and strengthening Japans’s economy

Set up of these new industries gave rise to new zaibatsu

  • large business corporations made huge profits from govt contracts in chemicals, construction and related areas
  • included Nissan, Nichitsu, Mori which were closely linked to and influenced by military
    • played key role in Japans empire through economic development and exploitation of resources in Korea and Manchuria.

Military hoped this would enable Japan to develop into self sufficient and industrially strong state.
