1929 Joseph Goebbels was in charge of propaganda for Nazis and he used it to exploit the effects of the depression. Nazi leaflets, newspapers, radio broadcasts blamed economic problems on TOV esp. clause on reparations. Blamed Weimar Politicians for being too selfish and divided to take the necessary action to get people back to work

  • they promised strong and decisive actions such as rebuilding German Armed forces which would create millions of jobs.

Nazi 25 point program also promised sympathy for the workers. Nazi propaganda also offered up culprits esp. Jews to blame for problems.

Nazi campaign was clear and effective in winning support of Germans. Hitler promised to:

  • end ineffective democratic coalition governments.
  • Restore the glory days of the Kaiser and authoritarian rule
  • return to traditional German values
  • Fight the threat of communism in elections, in the Reichstag and on streets. appealed to many Germans as it seemed to address their fears.

As a result large number of people gave Hitler and Nazis their support

  • wealthy industrialists provided party with campaign funds
  • Many Germans esp. those in middle class supported Hitler in villages, towns and cities throughout the country
  • Rural communities Nazis gained many votes from those who shared their views about traditional values.
