From Poor workers and farmers to wealthy Landowning aristocrats ⇒ right wing groups came from all classes of society Many of them ⇒ were former soldiers ⇒ including Freikorps who had fought the Spartacists in 1919.
March 1920 ⇒ Wolfgang Kapp ⇒ led 5000 Freikorps into Berlin in a rebellion known as Kapp Putsch Kapp ⇒ planned to overthrow Weimar Republic + return Germany to a more authoritarian system ⇒ similar to that in the time of the Kaiser
Weimar Govt ⇒ ordered German Army ⇒ to attack Freikorps and put down the rebellion. Army ⇒ refused to act against Freikorps ⇒ seemed as though Ebert’s govt was doomed
However ⇒ Germanys 12 million industrial workers and trade unions ⇒ came to the rescue ⇒ declared a general strike Country suddenly had no transport, power or water. At the same time ⇒ all civil servants and government officials ⇒ showed support for Ebert and refused to cooperate with Kapp
After a few days ⇒ Kapp realized he could not succeed and he fled the country → hunted down and died awaiting trial
Seemed like ⇒ Weimar Republic had some support and power after all → However besides Kapp ⇒ no other rebels were punished. Courts ⇒ set many rebels free. Political violence from right wing ⇒ continued after Kapp Putsch ⇒ but they were rarely punished
