Like Poles Repel, Unlike Poles Attract
- magnets have 2 poles.
- magnetic effects are strongest at the poles
- when iron fillings are sprinkled onto a bar magnet, most of the iron fillings are attracted to the 2 ends of the magnet.
Rest in North South Direction
- freely suspended magnet → comes to rest in the north south direction.
at the equator → north seeking side of the magnet will point towards earths geographical north pole
- we call this side of magnet north pole
→ south seeking side of magnet will point towards earths geographical south pole
- we call this side of magnet south pole.
what if magnet is suspended at earths geographical north pole or at the arctic north? fgwe
- the suspended magnet would be inclined at an angle
in fact → magnet is tilted towards earth magnetic pole since the magnet aligns itself with the earths magnetic field.

Have 2 Poles
- magnetic north and south poles of magnetic → always occur in pairs
when magnet is broken or divided into 2 → it will result in 2 smaller pieces of magnets with both north and south pole.

Attract Magnetic Materials
- magnetic attractions do not occur just between magnets
- attraction can also take place between magnet and object made of magnetic material
- however repulsion can only occur between 2 magnets.
- can only confirm that object is magnet if it repels another magnet

Important
Earth itself is a huge magnet → with S pole in north and N pole in south
