- encloses the entire PLANT cell ⇒ surrounding cell membrane
- protects cell from injury and gives the PLANT cell its fixed shape
- fully permeable ⇒ allows all substances to pass through ⇒ does not control type of substances that enter or exit the cell.
- absent in animal cells
