White Blood Cells
→ larger than red blood cells → Able to squeeze through walls of blood capillaries into body tissues
2 types of white blood cells:
- phagocytes
- lymphocytes
Phagocytes:
- polymorphs and monocytes
- Ingest and digest pathogens and bacteria
- Nucleus of polymorph are lobed and cytoplasm is granular.
Function of Phagocytes → to perform phagocytosis.
Definition
Phagocytosis is the process by which a white blood cell engulfs and destroys foreign particles such as bacteria and pathogens . #BiologyDefinitions
Lymphocytes:
- produced by bone marrow and mature in the lymph nodes (structures at different intervals of the body which acts like filters against foreign particles.)
- Large Rounded Nucleus
- Small Amount of non granular cytoplasm
produce antibodies that:
- recognize foreign particles
- destroy disease causing organisms such as bacteria and viruses
- cause bacteria to clump together → easy ingestion of phagocytes
- neutralize the toxins produced by bacteria.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Instead of saying foreign particles you must say PATHOGENS
Lymphocytes produce antibodies and not polymorphs or monocytes or phagocytes
