Chyme, enters duodenum it stimulates:

  • Pancreas to secrete pancreatic juice, which passes through pancreatic duct into the duodenum. It contains the following enzymes; pancreatic amylase, protease, and lipase. (NOTE: NO MALTASE)
  • Gall bladder to release bile. bile passes through bile duct into the duodenum. Bile is not an enzyme so it cannot break down food, but instead breaks up food to help speed up digestion of fats.
  • Epithelial cells in small intestine - to produce enzymes maltase, protease, and lipase. NOTE: NO AMYLASE

Food comes into contact with pancreatic juice, bile, and intestinal juice. all 3 fluids are alkaline: (special note: Alkalis)

Alkalis:

  • Neutralize the acidic chyme
  • Provide a suitable pH (pH8) for action of pancreatic and intestinal enzymes
