Method used depends on following physical properties of gas:
- Solubility: how easily gas dissolves in water.
- Density: How dense the gas is compared to surrounding air.
| Collection Method | Solubility of Gas in Water | Density of Gas | Examples |
|---|---|---|---|
![]() | Insoluble to very slightly soluble | Density does not affect gas collection | - Hydrogen - Oxygen - Nitrogen - Carbon Dioxide |
![]() | Can be soluble or insoluble | Denser than air | - Carbon dioxide - Sulfur Dioxide - Chlorine - Hydrogen Chloride |
![]() | Can be soluble or insoluble | Less dense than air | - Ammonia - Hydrogen |
Gas Syringe![]() | All Gasses (this is preferred method as it measures volume of gas as well) | All gasses | All Gasses |
