People from same country have a sense of national identity Comes from a shared belief of connectedness to one another + belonging to the country

When citizens share common spaces, practices, experiences they develop a sense of belonging and emotional attachment to the country.

Example:

  • Singaporeans consider hawker centers as an important common space that represents Singapore’s multicultural heritage.
    • 2019 many Singaporeans, including those living abroad pledged their support for countries nomination of its hawker culture to UNECO’s representative list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity which was recognized in December 2020
  • Singlish represents harmony in Singapore. Was born from generations of different races living and working together harmoniously.
    • Rojak Language > represents melting pot of races, religions, cultures, that helped shape Singapore into what it is today.
    • it is the glue that helps Singaporeans connect easily.
    • when travelling overseas it is easy to spot another Singaporean.
