Shaped by factors such as country’s history, heritage, experiences. can change over time as citizens respond to challenges faced by the country

When citizens share similar values these values can affect their thinking, attitudes and behavior. shared values may influence collective decision making and excersise of judgement

Attributes of shared values + sense of identity also interconnected. As Sporeans uphold value of multiculturism they take pride and identify this value as an essential part of the Singaporean identity


In embracing value of multiculturism Singaporeans generally believe in living in harmony in a multicultural and multireligious society they make a conscious effort to understand and develop good relationships with people from different races and religions take pride and identify this value as an essential part of the Singaporean identity.

2003 SARS crisis observed the request to take their own temperature and wash their hands frequently. those who were quarantined complied with the request Neighbours helped other neighbours who were unable to help themselves many volunteered to take temperatures of visitors to markets or to help disseminate accurate information about SARS to residents in HDB estates.

Value family as a basic unit of society family ties are very important to Singaporeans. Common to see strong intergenerational bonds = where 2-3 generations live under same roof Grandparents look after and impart knowledge to the young while parents are out at work and young are taught to carry out their filial responsibilities and express gratitude towards parents and grandparents.
